PS5 Vertical vs. Horizontal: Liquid Metal, Overheating & Repair Tips
Posted by DF Computer Centre on

Should your PlayStation 5 stand vertically or lie horizontally? A widely shared warning claims that standing a PS5 upright allows its liquid-metal cooling material to flow downward and overheat the CPU. But Sony officially supports both orientations when the appropriate stand is fitted. The evidence does not show that ordinary vertical use causes this failure in intact consoles.
What is PS5 liquid-metal cooling?
The PS5 uses liquid metal to transfer heat from its main processor to the heat sink. This electrically conductive thermal interface material is contained within the cooling assembly. Improper handling or leakage can damage circuitry, so internal work should be left to a qualified technician.
Does vertical placement cause liquid metal to leak?
Some repair technicians have documented individual PS5 consoles with liquid-metal displacement or leakage. However, these reports do not establish that vertical placement itself is the cause. The original PS5 and newer models are intended for horizontal or vertical use with the correct support accessories. Horizontal placement is a personal preference, not an official requirement to avoid overheating.
Warning signs of a PS5 cooling problem
- Overheating warnings and sudden shutdowns while gaming.
- Very loud fan operation, especially during demanding games.
- Repeated crashes or performance problems as the console warms up.
- Problems that continue after checking ventilation and accessible dust.
These symptoms do not necessarily mean a liquid-metal problem. Dust, blocked airflow, fan faults, and other hardware issues can produce similar symptoms.
Five ways to help prevent overheating
- Install the correct horizontal feet, base, or vertical stand for your PS5 model.
- Keep ventilation openings clear and avoid tightly enclosed cabinets.
- Turn off and unplug the console before cleaning accessible dust according to Sony's instructions.
- Keep your console on a stable surface to prevent accidental impacts or falls.
- If overheating warnings persist, stop prolonged use and arrange diagnosis instead of opening the processor cooling assembly yourself.

Frequently asked questions
Should I keep my PS5 horizontal?
You may, but Sony supports both horizontal and vertical positioning when correctly installed. The claim that all vertical PS5 units will leak liquid metal is unproven.
Will putting my PS5 horizontally fix overheating?
Not necessarily. Overheating may be caused by dust, airflow problems, fan issues, or internal faults that require investigation.
Should I replace the liquid metal myself?
No. Liquid metal is conductive and incorrect handling can cause damage. Seek professional service when internal cooling faults are suspected.
